We are also discussing and planning other workshops for the coming year. If you have ideas - or wishes - for where we should hold additional workshops, please let us know.

Telling the Story: Field Techniques for Documentary Photographers and Writers
March 1-5, 2010
Melbourne, Australia

IDSS, in association with Pictographers and with the support of Michaels Camera Video and Digital, will be hosting an exciting week-long workshop with the objective of helping your organization get the images and stories from your programs that really stand out.

This course is designed to help those with an interest in community development to represent the work they are passionate about in the best possible light. If you work with an non-governmental organization (NGO), community group, media organization, academic institution, aid agency, commercial aid company or government department - or have an interest in documentary photography and writing - you should consider attending this unique course.

Over the course of a week, this workshop will explore how you can use two enduring, engaging forms of communication - photography and writing - to create a culture of storytelling at your organization. Storytelling will help you make your organization’s work more vital and vibrant to supporters, as well as bringing the critical social issues you care about most to better awareness with new audiences.

The course will cover relevant topics and approaches in the classroom before practicing them in the field. Throughout the week, you will document your experiences through photography and writing, and then weave that work into a singular, powerful form of storytelling that gets results. The workshop will combine classroom-based sessions, field trips, assignments and critical feedback from an award-winning documentary photographer and a professional writer.

Tuition: AU$2,200.00 (about US$1,950). Includes registration, course notes, meals during classroom sessions (morning/afternoon tea and working lunch) and transport to/from field assignments. Class size is limited and spaces run out quickly.

You can register for this course through IDSS’s online registration page or by emailing Ruth Garner at training@idss.com.au. You can also email us at info@pictographers.org with your interest or inquiries.

Darjeeling Tea Plantation Workshop
March 26 - April 6, 2010
Darjeeling, India

Pictographers is hosting a ten-day documentary field techniques workshop in Darjeeling, India.  The workshop is for photographers wishing to learn how to document field programs for non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Photographers will learn documentary techniques and then put them to practice on rural tea plantations and farming communities in northeast India’s Darjeeling district. After two days of lectures and shooting exercises in the city of Darjeeling, participants will do in-depth fieldwork photographing the life of a family living and working amid Darjeeling’s fabled yet challenging tea plantations.

The workshop is intended for photographers, aid workers, anthropologists or university students with a passion for documentary photography. The workshop will cover such topics as: approaching and gaining access to beneficiaries, working with interpreters, ethics and workflow. Students will leave the workshop with a working foundation of documentary field techniques, as well as a completed portfolio.

Tuition: US$3,200, which includes meals, lodging, emergency evacuation insurance and ground transportation. Getting to and from Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the responsibility of the student.
