Pictography

Language began as pictographs, word-pictures with deep meaning and insight into culture. We often think of them as cave-paintings, clues into past civilizations. Yet we still see them nearly every day, all around us as signs of daily life: they symbolize the way to a hospital, where we can get a drink of water or catch the bus. Both ancient and current, pictographs are simple but powerful communication: they are easily understood and invite action.

As an agency, Pictographers seeks to connect the world’s most vulnerable populations to those who can help them, using the combined power of words and photographs. We believe that simple, powerful communication - person to person - can change the world.

Our skills and backgrounds are rooted in photography and writing, but in becoming Pictographers we strive for something more: the two things combined into something visually striking, insightful, memorable and deeply affecting. We want to explore culture, history, human dignity and development through this new form. We aim to achieve social change through this new Pictography.

Pictography transcends words and pictures; it combines the two into something immediately and globally understood. Our approach creates connections and engages audiences. We craft stories and photographs into powerful new communications that inform, inspire action and achieve social change.
